Placemaking

Illustrator, InDesign, SketchUp

My thesis project, Don't Use the ICE in America, became an opportunity to include as my personal placemaking project in CDES 4151: Design in Public Space. This project becomes an extension within a new environment and community engagement.

This design concept involves Site Observations, Schematic Design, and placemaking rendors with SketchUp. Not only has the thesis project been displayed in a gallery, it can expand further through the representation and context dedicated to Don't Use the ICE in America.

THESIS OVERVIEW

Don't Use the ICE in America reflects the ongoing abuse and illegal detainment immigrant families have been facing by Immigration Customs and Enforcement. Shown on the right is a poster series inspired by Lotería, symbolizing four connected themes: fear and violence in the negative aspect, with solidarity and empowerment in the positive aspect to protect local immigrants.

During the process and preparation of my thesis project, I connected with Casa De Paz, a non-profit organization willing to support released immigrants from detention centers in Colorado. The handouts becomes an important takeaway that functions as a Lotería card and provides information about Casa De Paz on the back of the cards.

This leads into the Site Map and Observations to create multiple perspectives where placemaking would occur. Having the documentation in place benefits the Inventory of all placemaking items; size, material, and location.
